I did some more spot testing and kept finding inconsistent results. I tested a couple of other computers with that same Intel(R) Display Audio driver, and found that some upgraded fine without presenting the same error. I wrote a query in SCCM to detect this driver, and I found it was on thousands of computers. Which then required some hands on manual windows update remediation to get them working again. After failing the 1903 update, it also broke windows updates, and caused the system to stop getting patches after this failure. We would have discovered this earlier, but our organization skipped the 1809 update due to the widespread problems reported, and some people losing data. With some investigating I found that Windwas incompatible with Intel(R) Display Audio driver. In pilot testing I found an error that the logs said was caused by intcdaud.sys driver. Incompatible Driver causes update to fail. But some updates are incompatible with the existing drivers on the system. SCCM makes deploying the semi annual updates a lot easier than any manual method. Matching specific device driver versions to versions of Windows can be a confusing and a tedious hassle, to say the least.
